A Good Highway

Dreams you away from
strangers in barrooms,
past lovers
and their asymptote smiles.
 
Like a developing plot,
a good highway can reel you in without struggle,
point its finger skyward
and, at once, you’re in flight,
 
casting you out
quicker than physician`s tongues
that wag for their next
ride through the Laurentians.
 
In a reclined seat
beneath Precambrian skyscrapers
and cedars that saw at the skyline,
a good highway takes you North –
 
scree, muskeg, the scent of your grandmother,
and a miner's town, stillborn.
