he is blue

in an atmosphere of pink



his series of horizons

tips toward the vertical

leaning like happy drunks

on the purple frame of evening



a small explosion

releases colour from a circle of water

as if a hand had stirred

where a hand had painted itself





green draws the edge around the page

he draws a sky

where his father wants

a simple shape to hold the colour in



a sea of tempera

runs across the paper

unhindered by instruction

barely a dry record

of an activity that hasn’t ceased

he is just in another part of the room

soon he will rush back in to give this painting away

‘I made this for you!’



colour rushing across the paper

dragged by something larger than a brush

paint dripping from the action

like blood from a car accident

colours colliding

greens racing into a rain of magenta

brown left behind while others escape



he was here

he painted

then he played with his fire truck

then they both came back

and finished the painting
