Heavy

all is heavy on the water

the lake its ripples that turn the tide,
the quiet sand beneath the water,
the firm ‘tug-tug’ of a fisherman’s pole,
heavy on this water

the sun that fills the noon of day,
the idle stones that crowd the shore,
the wounded gull who flys no more,
heavy on this water

and a boat,
that turns against the current,
paddles cuffing hard against the wind,
casting over 
and arching under
the water again 
and again

to find me heavy on this shore.
