Riverbank

The sound of water over the rocks
Washes out the hum of car wheels,
And the spray and foam look to me
like so much drifting snow.
Running along the edge of the stream,
Is a lip of ice that the river licks at,
Ceaselessly—labial, smooth, and dripping.
And thus, drop by drop, the steady work
Of a moist tongue melts the ice away.
