DEATH OF ANOTHER DRIVER

        The morning sun
considers the facade of a downtown motel
we are in the realms of black & white
gentle jazz clarinet the inner courtyard
contains the dusk & dust of the underworld

- dice - - room number
Green Chartreuse, massive open book
a gold-framed photograph suffers a slow arrow of light
reveals a couple arm-in-arm in formal attire
insipid gloom where the mending man cowers

dreams of a patio singalong
women & children look lovely in the summer night
wine & jewelry have the sparkle of happiness
"We are married now so that means forever."
traditional Korean pansori flute - bittersweet

an Antonioni moment
we back out of that cell turn, survey the frozen jailyard
gaze toward a tall hedge & the sound
of a car approaching doors slamming tires screeching
we are paralyzed on our track

birdsong against the low moan of air conditioners
we return to the realms of colour
a news anchor reads, "One,
his mother said, pierced his heart."
again the pansori flute bitter
